大雪纷飞，落难书生莫稽倒卧金玉奴门前阶上，玉不忍，将他救起，玉父金松为叫化头子，素仗义疏财，慨然留稽在家暂住。稽、玉朝夕相对，互相爱慕，不久结为夫妇。玉、松父女随稽上京赴考，稽高中进士后，却嫌弃两人出身寒微，在客店掌柜唐三朵挑拨下，对他们百般奚落。松不堪受辱离家，玉心碎投江，稽悔恨不已。上任江西知县后，稽被巡按招为婿，却不知新娘正是获巡按救起的玉。洞房之夜，玉偕婢女仗棍在新房相候，棒打薄情郎。稽跪地向玉、松认错，在巡按调解下，玉终允破镜重圆。。A shipowner intends to scuttle his ship on its last voyage to get the insurance money.
